Elegant Buxton has been welcoming visitors to enjoy its natural thermal springs and superb setting 300 metres above sea level since Roman times – the highest Market Town in England!

Known then as Aquae Arnemetiae, or the Spa of the Goddess of the Grove, it’s fortunes are currently reviving thanks to the restoration of it’s Grade 1 Listed centrepiece, The Crescent, as a five-star hotel and spa.

​

When the hotel opens, the town’s famous thermal water, which rises from the earth at a constant temperature of 28 degrees C (82 degrees F), will be used again for spa treatments for the first time in decades.

​

The Quadrant was designed and built in the mid-1800s for the 5th Duke of Devonshire – I believe during the late 1800s early 1900s, 9 The Quadrant was converted into “gentlemen’s apartments”.  The building was later converted and used as the main Post Office & Sorting Office for Buxton.  Connexions, the government information, advice, guidance and support service for young people, moved into the building during the 1990s when the Post Office closed.  We purchased the building in 2013 and spent 5 years lovingly converting the building into 4 luxury apartments.  Dominos are also our tenants.

The Old Post Office is a beautiful Grade 2 listed building.  The area is very cosmopolitan with an interesting mix of high-quality businesses including independent branded shops, restaurants and bars and luxury residential accommodation.

​

The Quadrant is literally a “stone’s throw” from all of Buxton’s architectural finest gems including the striking Devonshire Dome, which has a larger span than St Paul’s Cathedral.  The Dome was built by the Duke as stables to complement The Crescent and later became a hospital and is now a University.

​

Another masterpiece is the exquisite Edwardian Opera House, home of the internationally renowned Buxton Festival and host of other festivals, theatre, music and comedy shows throughout the year.  Close by is the historic Old Hall Hotel, where ill-fated Mary Queen of Scots was held captive in the 16th Century. Just a short walk away can be found the mysterious Poole’s Cavern.

The beautifully landscaped and restored Pavilion Gardens, with its formal borders, lawns, play areas, lake, and family-friendly café and shop are just 3 mins walk from The Quadrant.
